This is the -- castle show Howard and charge my batteries specialists. Are -- Gilchrist called back. And called me you know and may hold. Indirect and -- what I should be taken off the air yes. Yes yes he played Glenn Beck -- instead you. Okay I I can't you -- it's -- and push the buttons are all funny amendments it's -- many have tried and many have failed. To get me off the air Chris listen up. You're you're brilliant phone call and your wonderful attitude has prompted a call from June. In -- clear hi Jim. Lot of low power you I'm fine thank you so a massive police presence last night army National Guard everybody protecting -- a clear right. Elliott county deputies we had back and county deputies. And then comp aren't fifth straight time -- first becoming an issue and a player. I have any better than pretty -- -- had a police officer. And they did not allow cars down there right because there's just a one street subdivision. All be onto something here OK so. How long have you lived in -- clear. Almost forty years forty years almost. So why would it be necessary to have that many. Or police officers. And indeed I think you told Chris there was a fired from there to there why why why why would that be necessary and why would that be fair. When I'm sure there wasn't any police presence or fire truck in radically most neighborhoods -- Polk County last night. Well when Halloween about 818 years to get there wasn't an accident where -- firecracker was thrown into residents. Garage. And the health conference I hear these and the fire truck could not get into the -- to -- and a clear because spend such as the straight. Well bumper to bumper with cars and then people walking down the street. It delayed the fire trucks five minutes -- that to that side here and the handling lost their house. Right but dead that was you think it -- Chris thought it was twenty years ago you're saying -- attitude to go. And it was that it. I want to when he I don't think. Yeah. They're neighborhood I was in last night was really really crowded too. What I what I'm just wonder why you know why that neighborhood would get the same protection because anybody beat you have to mid June. Anybody could does start a fire in any neighborhood. So why would there be special consideration for -- clear. Aren't they -- It very bad and then why did the property owners and Shannon clear then. Continue to have Halloween if it's as bad as you just described. Well because that residents some president let that happen. A lot of questions not to its and it infiniband -- because. You can't imagine the traffic is so bad the -- that can even get out of their driveways. And then when they didn't they can't get up the street because it's bumper to bumper we have that problem I'm not. Primary really popular neighborhood. It -- an end and the cars that are not members. -- -- coming from and -- what the practical thing answered this is. So you've you can use -- eight. We have and the pants without Cameron is that we haven't done this awhile. So what we do is. So I think the -- is at 6 o'clock and 8 o'clock. And a program for -- for -- to participate they have their ally and they're right by mr. delighted -- health -- and if they don't turn it off then at 8 o'clock everybody has to -- And Abraham. How do you make sure that happens. Well we had eight at BP but also you have law enforcement forcing people believe it -- addition and a clear current pay for that app. All you mean you pay extra -- -- addition to your regular taxes so there are these do you know -- are these off duty policeman that they are also there are many. -- -- -- certainly but this is that you know I think just that you know just. A second job so to speak. Right so there moonlight. Their -- on how okay we'll clarifies that because if you if your neighborhood if you wanna take -- the extra money. For officers who otherwise wouldn't be working on Halloween I don't have any problem that now I think you center. And I -- the residents that are homeowners association. You you pay for them to be their for those two are so. Okay what will it ever more I think fine print at -- -- -- -- NAND write what about the fire truck you pay for that -- I don't think that was a volunteer I think I'm not sure. Mean. Yeah and just forget how other. Neighborhoods would she -- for example -- -- you guys pay for a -- that I don't have any issue with that neighbors can get together and do whatever they wanna do. But. I just it's it's it is this kind of problem as Chris described. And now is you have described you know bumper to bumper to. Believed that and in their people in the middle of the string I don't think we have got clogged and -- clear. So she can't walk in a person's yard. Right so I would think the practical thing to do would be just to say this this is too much trouble. I mean really it's it's just too much trouble and especially you know -- all these other people come and you don't live there or do you. Well I don't comment made but admitted the problem and needed as a major problem can be just I did the people at -- coming right. Tens in twelve scripture that. Yeah that's and that's what I mean I don't believe that's a little tiny babies didn't struggle. -- It's a last night my my grandson was out the strong. -- addressed W as a little -- man. And -- knew he was accused trigger trigger. -- -- -- including the letting out all right candy Crowell we get it didn't get into it again I can't even -- It doesn't have any teeth -- movement he's he's only six muscle. A lot of people celebrate Halloween monsters and the biggest. Implementation. Of the -- -- other. No -- June there's a lot of answers to that met I I for the life of me I really don't understand the thrilled that some so called adults kids. Dressing up and looking stupid I just just me. And but the real thing is is it kind of mirrors a problem that we have in the country right now. That people love getting stuff they think is for free. And you and I know Jim nothing is free. I didn't try somebody got to pay for. Now I like the tradition of -- I guess it when it when I was little you know I -- like anybody else but I got to the point now where. We we don't celebrate Halloween and our house you know will do will go to our daughters or whatever. But am. I I thought about this long time ago and I just thought about what kind of impression. Are we giving our kids I mean they don't have to trick or treat you give me when I want or I'm gonna I'm gonna do certain. And I think that's in that in the current that it wasn't that way when I was grown up but the in the current. Society in which we live I'm not sure that's good lesson to be teaching young children. I literally and then the treats that people care about can be poisonous -- it's still not -- and I can't. These people thank our neighborhood so he can have a little me. -- like we still go through everything we've done this for years yet it and and this goes back a long time. Because we had years ago you know the stories about people Clinton razor blades in -- And it's an apple can enhance. The pagan -- I remember our daughter was his thanks very -- in the -- -- we're having -- Halloween -- -- -- so much. And there was so rigid that lived over near the train station back confiscate nearly intact. You can call it anything but do not collect Halloween. Instead -- our holiday. Well yesterday was reformation day really -- -- and to do that at our church -- chocolate -- that other alternatives are far far better message than than Halloween. Yes it and I -- treat June I'm glad you called. Well thank you that we have a guy like in the traffic is awful reckoning. People cannot get in an -- grand yeah I just I just don't see why is that a problem. I know I just don't know why you would put up for that it would be realized I'm not have that it would be really easy I've I've -- numbers show a clear many times played golf over there. And it would be real easy there you basically got one main entrance you know coming in right there from across from the hospital. Arafat and yeah it would be really easy to. You don't take it you would need indeed many take a couple of those cops and post about their next year -- saved due to -- problems we've been having we're gonna have Halloween. Particularly rent we can't cut that we can't begin to teach or anything like that because -- It for granted we're gonna need an an ambulance or something you know which has -- Randolph. But I'm talking about just blocking it for triggered traders just put a big sign going. Hey we're not -- -- how about we thought about that picture you know like I say it that that they can have -- yeah America her as well any any any -- gonna have a vote saying habit then you really can't complain about the problems factly but that's about that don't vote for -- -- -- So I guess up John thanks for your call up thank you guys ever get that are used to art runs texting -- hi -- -- your outfit the hypothetical for yet. I tear it down a road going to be confiscated. He actually putting guys -- -- figure out so they can they are that we should be deeply pepper few books that wanted to core sports scribe. It sit there and you're living room you're young guy you've got a wife stare at. Every little children are you rather than machete now which would you rather have a firearm -- gonna get they've got with a machete or would you ever -- that city. -- problem of gun control. I think that in consideration that Cink accurate involved in any thing that it used. As and that's so what can become a political weapon out of me because -- a big role that we are using it -- just sitting in law is violated no -- got. Here's my answer to that this is why you always got to think at least one or two steps ahead in your scenario. If I got. Did you say three coming in with machetes. One -- what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna get him with my crossbow. Yeah. -- -- there -- or might taser or a bit Tianjin I did let -- all my secrets. And -- -- what are what Joseph Biden -- say about that maybe get straight ticket and I know it's really -- the -- is how it. Clearly -- this -- gun control. Well it really really is and we've had for two mornings in a row now. Home invasions and they're both at the same description three. Masked people with guns. Breaking in the people's homes and they the authorities are still look for. So did you -- it just puts a thought in your head you've you've got to think what would I do. What would you do that. -- well at four million that's situation we're forgot what will be -- so why would I know that I have a disparity of force in virtually all situations. Sort of disparity of forces are my side and it's not going to be within a machete I'm guaranteeing -- -- much. No no it's not going to be equal -- at the. -- it's unbelievable well hey you know nowadays. Yeah I've thoroughly appreciate showed. Great thank you thank you so much. -- liberty thank you for waiting -- Hey thank you for making our -- they more addressed in version. Let's so we need to do is somebody -- both -- say they break the law would get strong direct never told us -- want to oratory to hold up or not it's very very -- is there really get going to be a problem Margaret. Well I we've talked about that before that and the bicycle us and everything else and now all you know in Greenville county I I just happen to believe. That -- the big push for this increase in the sales tax is to put even more of -- there and build more trails and has is very little to do. With improving roads. And you know county council is going to be about that this again next Tuesday. There's going to be an effort to act as a matter of fact I know they're going to be asked to reconsider what they did last week. And it all as a matter of how many people show up. And let him know we do not want any kind of sales tax or any kind of tax increase. Here in Greenville county thank you well for lead me into this. Mentioned this last -- there's a new Winthrop poll out. I'm looking for one person. Who thinks we should have higher gasoline taxes to explain to us your reasoning -- -- Odd state newspaper. -- underway this is written by Adam big. A slim majority of south Carolinians say they wouldn't support an increase. In the states gas tax to improve roads a new poll. Conducted by Winthrop University released this week. Chose that fifteen. Point 5%. A South Carolina residents would support. An increase. And then we get to -- editorial part it is the second time this year the Winthrop poll widely cited as an indicator of -- south Carolinians are -- getting. Found a majority of South Carolina residents disagree. With these decisions of their state legislature. Now at this for the story this is when they shifted in. To trying to write a piece. That is pushing it for an increase in the gasoline tax in my -- But he writes the Republican controlled general assembly has refused. To raise the State's sixteen and a half cents a gallon gas tax. The fourth lowest in the country. This despite several bipartisan attempts to increase. -- the legislature also refused to expand. The State's Medicaid program. Which provides health insurance to -- and disabled despite a Winthrop poll earlier this year. They found a majority of south Carolinians support Medicaid expansion. Really in both cases. But I've been writes the majority support was not overwhelming. Fifty point 5% for the gas tax fifty point 8%. For Medicaid expansion. But the results still were contrary. To the outsized opposition to the ideas in the state legislature. Scott Hoffman went from poly sci professor. And does these polls said south Carolinians are not as deeply divided as our political parties -- our. We need to be reasonable and reach a reasonable compromise. Politics is driven the debate on both topics. The Medicaid expansion proposal was part of -- Barack Obama's controversial health care law. Which Republicans vehemently oppose the gas tax increase proposal. Came after department of transportation officials told lawmakers. That helped your -- to raise an additional 29 billion dollars in new money. Over the next twenty years just to maintain. The State's highway system which it says here is the fourth largest in the country. You know what I didn't know that. Are going to be. South Carolina has the fourth. Largest highway system in the country in. He writes a bipartisan group. A five senators proposed borrowing one point three billion this year to start repairs they also proposed a gradual increase in the gas tax. Increasing it by four cents a gallon over the next ten years. That would bring him an extra 131 million dollars to help maintain roads. The bill supporters refused to call of the tax increase referring to it as -- motor vehicle user fee. But the backlash was swift state senator Shane -- Republican Spartanburg. Told colleagues he would race to descendants of what turned to filibuster. Any attempt to raise taxes. Rick Todd executive director of the trucking association in South Carolina supports a gas tax increase quote the politics of it is just mending to meet. It's a squeaky close majority but I think that means people are starting to pay attention to it. Supporters of a gas tax increase say it would be it will be almost impossible to pass. Unless the governor supports it neither candidate for governor in next year's election supports. So why not even sure dean. Supports. If this poll. Right let's assume that this poll is accurate. What does that tell you about South Carolina. Again as I've said many times South Carolina referred to as all register -- it's it's a conservative state. How could a conservative. Be in favor. Of raising. Contact right now now rhinos are in favor of it because they're not conservatives. Liberals that's all they think about 24/7. Is more taxes. But -- South Carolina truly is. You know and the state the conservative state that then it's. You know. Assumed to beat. There and something's wrong here. South Carolina really is like three different entities you've got the upstate which is concerned. You've got Colombia and below. Which are anything but conservative and then you have Charleston. Which is a different country. And liberal. So hundreds. 50% pretty much right down the middle. I mean that proves that theory. It's also how Lindsey Graham plans -- elected the next reelected because he's gonna try to get everything below Columbia. So I I just wanna bring this up because roads taxes all of that is something we've talked about a lot this week. And so -- welcome your comments Jim is in Spartanburg with a comment on the Winthrop poll hi Jim. Get morning rush hour you can find who if you -- -- doing -- all rainy day to -- dot it's taken a pretty even to great things here on the polls. I hate holds. Absolutely hate them they're -- You cannot tell me that anytime anyone. Debt as a deep interest in something won't say -- bit there. They can and the right pollster to get in the interest they won't plus he gave -- like both answered so many polls over the phone. As well as all Latin whenever there's any question and so forth. There always skewed you can sit and look at immune Benoit -- you know it is just like yesterday for instance W -- PA had to alternate sit. If you take your children. Trick or treating. Well I have children not my children are grown so no I don't take good trick or treating so I had to bet that no hope they would be the other way right -- -- actually went there are so -- any key to oversee -- a hole. On the web site someplace there are in the paper anything out challenge that all. No it -- to stand the information as to. Eight that great one question -- and what questions were yeah yeah we're they -- -- what -- think they went to so long that blacks. He cannot get that information. You cannot do it I have sat for hours and hours and hours attempting to get this information cannot cannot get. Well I I have it right here at that the Winthrop poll -- -- Carolinians well I I got to take a quick break but it you bring it up a good point Jim and I'll do this coming up so stand by stay tuned I'll actually give you the questions. All right 1026. You're listening to the live and local Ross castle show this is the Russ castle show powered and. Cards to -- batteries specialists -- 1035 so here are the questions. From the Winthrop poll. Where they have determined that a majority is slim majority of south Carolinians. One racing gasoline tax to do something about these roads. Question one would you support or oppose any increase in the gas tax with a new gas tax money going to improve roads and bridges. Supporting -- fifty point five. Percent opposed. 47 point 6%. Not sure our refused to answer one point 9%. Question to. Would you support or oppose this new gas tax if it meant an extra one dollar to two dollars for atypical fill up. This was asked only of those who supported. A higher gas tax. 61 point 7% said -- 37%. Said no not sure refused to answer one point 3%. Lastly would you support or oppose this new gas tax. If it meant an extra three or four dollars for a typical Philip. Then again was asked only of those who said they would accept a dollar two dollars extra per -- Now 38% said they support -- sixty point 6% said they wouldn't supported -- the poster was trying to do is to see -- for people. We'll go. So 61 point 7% said their good men and extra barker true typical fill up I'd go forward. But when asked if it meant an extra three or four dollars extra for a typical fill up sixty point 6%. Have they oppose that. Folks what this is part of this thing happened with the cigarette tax that I never could figure that out. We have been at one time -- one of the lowest taxes on cigarettes in the nation which I think is a good thing. As a conservative I think any kind of tax. If we're one of the lowest in the nation I think that's something we can be proud of but -- entities in this state that believe it is some kind of bad Jo Bonner. To have some of the highest taxes in the country. And they've been pushing for this for years. And then they basically lie when they're gonna do you know with the money. It up governor Haley -- give her credit. She can't have. You know settle this. She signed into law earlier this year a bill that authorizes -- -- wanted to borrow up to 600 million dollars this year. To repair roads. And she said will use fifty million in state income. And sales taxes to pay off the debt over the next fifteen years. Combined with -- other sources of money for roads. This bill that the governor that signed. Is more than a billion dollars. That we will have for roads and it's without raising the gasoline tax and yet there -- others. In the state -- on an increase in the gasoline tax. Insanity. And it brings somebody -- up. So -- all of this going on at the state level and this push. To increase the gasoline tax now that the Winthrop poll says its slim but more than half say they would supported. Then why is Greenville county. Doing what they're doing with county council this week holding to proceed. With the committee that will lead to a referendum question next November. To increase our local option sales tax by a penny. To take care not just our roads here in the county. But to improve state roads. And even -- is in question now. Because I think there's growing evidence. That they won't use it for roads at all. It'll be used for quote quote new projects which I take to mean more bike trails and were walking paths. This email -- why in the hell would we wanna raise the gasoline tax. What is collected now goes into the general fund did not for the fix the roads more tax would be more to the general fund and we would still have bad roads. I'm tired of the -- interruptions of that -- a corruption of this government that comes from Roger. The -- to Stephen Easley high state. Heroes hey I don't do all right a -- -- arm -- I'm repair -- road -- in her tracks why well. Assert. Certain players and just Russian Beirut urged first. Sanches. Well -- -- and well look there are brutal -- There are bigger there's stability and sort of suffer or don't. -- -- -- sitting there attributes for the roads. That are out for the urge to work for her parents. Why or I can tell you right now that is not going to happen. And I can say that with some certainty they're not gonna create a separate account. So if they don't would you still be in favor of increasing it. I don't much go. But you'd still be in favor. -- Serwer so why do you think higher taxes actually will solve the problem. As I just shared with you just from what was signed -- -- just this year. When you add it all up it's more than a billion dollars for roads that how much is enough state. Well here we're getting closer and I'll I do or do group. Miller who -- is there any dosing that is our goal like the -- regression starts. Ago were fairly. That was supposed produced no Torino was little. I think. Turks -- huge problem Sanchez. On food. I know I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't have any idea what you're talking about first of all the governor in this state really doesn't have much power. The legislature controls that so I'm curious why you would blame that on the governor. You know the legislature in the state they'll tell -- right up front. They run things especially over where you live and easily there senator over there makes it very clear. Did you know he's a very powerful person and he runs things in the states senate. You know they laughed at people like Nikki Haley and even that people like bill Chamblee and others in the house. Because said they they really are the good old boys club. But I still back to the whole thing. Stephen Euro lifetime. Have you ever known can you think of one tax. That is ever actually solve the problem. -- So why do we need more taxes especially at a time when a lot of folks -- struggle. Well why would we take more money out of the private economy. So that people can't. Make the economy go they can't buy a they can buy as much gas they can't by you know gross race. They're worried about Christmas coming appear. In just a few short weeks why would we wanna take more money. Out of the private economy and trust the politicians with it. Well article. Our group. Very good thanks for the call state. Just short code. Has written a piece that you got to hear about this. And it's entitled -- kind of council is misleading residents. On this proposal to. Have a vote on and penny increase. In the sales tax to do something about roads. Here's what Joshua cook writes. Some members of the -- kind of council are misleading residents on the proposed 1% sales tax increase. If the council members vote to put the tax increase on the ballot next year the John Torrey will pass like it has and other counties. They claimed a 65 million dollar tax increase will be used for road maintenance repair this his faults. He writes. Road maintenance is needed in -- vocally but the simple truth is that we already pay taxes to repair both state and county roads. We pay fifteen dollars for county road maintenance when we register our vehicles. And pay for state road repair when we Philip. A Department of Transportation official this week said quote we have the money to repair roads and -- county. They are essentially raising the 1% tax to raise the match a federal money this has nothing to do with filling pot holes. This is for new projects in quote. No one is against new projects and revoke county rice writes Josh -- but the question remains has -- pay for. Now is not the time. To create unnecessary new projects. When so many working families are struggling seniors are struggling to make ends meet on fixed incomes. Councilman Willis -- said the increase sales tax for a family of four or cost them 300 dollars a year. This league represented a windy nanny said quote I am not one for increasing taxes I have never voted for a tax increase in quote. So why is her father councilman Bob Taylor supporting a tax increase on the working for in the middle class. Why didn't he kill the proposed tax increase last Monday we had the chance. In Monday's coming council meeting lot of Gibson damn -- Joseph dill said -- and Willis meadows tried to kill. The proposed increase in the sales tax. Why -- we need to increase the sales tax to repair state roads and our state legislators borrowed 550. Million dollars from China this year. The infrastructure bank is currently determining what state project should be funded at at the time of this publication. But how much of the 550 million dollars or -- -- -- receive for the special projects. It includes. Instead of proposing. A 65 million dollar tax increase on Greenville county residents to pay for new projects. Greenville county council should ask the infrastructure bank to fund these projects. When he -- said she wanted to investigate where this money is going to make sure that -- Connie gets its fair share. I DOT official this week said quote. Here is the reality counties like all recounting and Buford county have learned that if they bring money to the table. Then they get their projects done if they can bring 10% for example the odds are your projects will be approved. So cook says does this mean. That the infrastructure bank is holding Greenville county road funds hostage. Unless we bring money to the table. He says it's apparent the Greenville county council wants to raise taxes in order to increase federal matching funds for new projects. Allowing a tax increase to go on a ballot is irresponsible. The special interest in powerful lobbyists know how to get their measures passed they have been successful in other counties and the odds are stacked in their favor. Last paragraph simple truth is that unless citizens -- -- -- county stand up. And demand county council kill this proposed sales tax hike next Tuesday. The odds are the 1% sales tax will pass. If it's on the ballot next year if passed. This tax will hurt working families seniors on fixed incomes and small businesses it's time to demand county council vote to kill. The proposed sales tax on Tuesday county square. And that's written by Joshua Coke chairman Republican liberty caucus of greens. Back in a moment 1046. I think quite -- chant is next then we're content. Robredo and do the right I only don't live in -- wrong neighborhood you know that. It's good and if we don't have any -- and I and -- neighborhood at all we have we had a group of your family would put two kids teach you to come around I don't want to years and they've grown up there about twelve or thirteen to that too old for all archer retreating now. You know it's instinct even in the neighborhood I was in last night I noticed this year. More houses. Not participating in Halloween than I ever have in my entire life. There were more houses with the lights soft and usually can tell you know. There if you're participating got -- it's on yeah if you're not you you know got the lights off the and I noticed more houses last night just saying -- now I'm gonna do that. The other -- -- want to touch on was the taxes. You'll remember I'm sure about -- Thirteen years ago here in in in South Carolina. They had to do with the road use tax. And they decided they they they shut it up on the ballot for people to vote and what they've voted supposed to take it away from the state control and what the people couldn't understand what they want that for the ballot and voted was there are shipping it so that. Tony in the city. So really what they do was say they they thought they were -- lower their party's taxes leadership that it over to the cities and the counties therefore doubling the available now have to actually they were given him and everybody I talked to Canada went up all the all -- -- I'm -- Broderick but I'd love Clark I don't like you're not. Not marrying you're you're given them and property kinda look at what you do what you've given them an opportunity to raise taxes the most. Well I I'm just I'm still a little shocked. This week just a little. They're county -- tried to do this pick because your 4 I am Ted and maybe I'm wrong but I don't think so. I am at a point in my life with all the money that we spend money that we don't have. Debt that will be passed on to our children and grandchildren and beyond. I'm at a point where just hands down no way Jose. I don't think any stink and politician needs another dime of my money they'd they'd taken too much of my money. Beirut and whoever that means if if it means we have to do with less of something I'm ready for. -- you don't do anything I mean proof positive look at our whole iPod Touch and don't fix anything all they do is create more corrupt power and they and they and they create more opportunity to give people know this contract and they're just throwing arm want he's -- -- they're just like vampires they never. Quench that thirst for blood never do it and they just always are trying to Steen and figure out and when they go another way to get in my pocket. And NFL after of people voting Barack Obama to the White House twice I'm convinced that the average American will vote prior taxes I just I think that that. Blind but I really -- -- that is a starve the beast in bitty thing if we won't get. You know our economy back on the way it used to be or at least close to where it used to be. We got to put more money in people's pockets. Because people are what make the economy go Texans don't make the economy go. Taxes are the written that's one of the reasons why we're in the mess we're in since Barack Obama was elected I read this week we have increased taxes three trillion dollars up three. Trillion dollars. Thank you -- at 1053 you're listening to WORD. Live and local 1063. News talk and sports.
