Everybody everybody needs to have a weapon and know how to use that stop these home invasions. There's a new study out speaking of guns that links gun ownership to racism. -- -- when you hear this. Coming up next 839 now time for an update. I guess those home invaders must be blatant racism tried this and on for size big headline. Racism linked with a gun ownership and opposition to gun control in white America us. There's than just new study has found that higher levels of racism and white Americans. Is associated with having a gun in the home. And greater opposition to gun control policies. Research published in PLO west one. Led by doctor Kerry O'Brien monitors university Australia. And Manchester university in the UK used data from a large representative sample of white US voters. Ever counted for numerous other factors such as income education and political ideology. The researchers found. Then for each one point increase on a scale from one to five in what they're calling symbolic racism. There was a 50% increase in the odds of having a gun in the home. NH 48% increase in support for policies. Allowing people to carry concealed weapons. Research stimulated by gun control debates in the US after mass shootings such as sandy hook. And research. Showing black Americans. Or more likely to be shot than whites the more most recent figures are that there are approximately 38000 gun related deaths in the US each year. With other research suggesting having a gun in the home is related to a two point seven or four point eight fold increase. In the risk of a member of that home dying from homicide or suicide. Doctor O'Brien coming from countries with strong gun control policies at 830 full. Thirty -- lower rate of gun related homicides. We found the arguments for opposing gun control counter intuitive. And somewhat illogical. For example white Americans oppose gun control to a far greater extent than do black Americans. But whites are actually more likely to kill themselves with the guns. Then be killed by someone else. So why would you keep that. We decided to examine what's coach social and psychological factors. Predict gun ownership and opposition to gun control your jobs conservatism. Anti government sentiment party identification. Being from a southern state. Were also associated with opposition to gun control. But the association between racism. And the gun related outcomes remained. After accounting for these factors and other participant characteristics being age education income and gender. So what is symbolic racism exploit. Symbolic racism. Supplanted old fashion or overt or blatant racism. Which was associated with open support for race inequality and segregation under Jim Crow laws. But it still captures the anti black sentiment and traditional values that underpinned blatant racism. Bonds -- understand that. Symbolic break -- old similar racism is also related stronger opposition to policies. That may benefit black Americans such as welfare. And greater support for policies that seem to disadvantaged black Americans such as longer prison sentences. Both of the guys who did this summed it up our results -- first step. But there needs to be more funding for empirical research. Around how racial biases make influence people's policy decisions. And particularly those policies that impact on the health and wellbeing. A US citizens. So there you go and that's a new ones. I have -- I haven't ever read that before our quick call before break careless talk to Mike in traveler's rest time Ike. They Russ sorry I'm fine. I just a few quick comments on the pit -- saying -- Additional money. Well didn't I got about three reasons that I can think others first of all it's all. Most of the average person can do about it to even need to pay their bills. Truth be said and I think a lot more people are not carrying car insurance. And they're afraid that if they stop this state did hit someone there called BC news which is true. And then the other thing is I can't stop the red light hardly without CNN. You know I mean we are yet I think you need to address the greater the problem but it didn't say that you don't get -- all delighted that it could not back to back up. Did Biden call anybody racist doesn't make it true but here's what I wanna know so all look like Chicago this weekend if it's like. You know most weekends. You'll have a tremendous amount of black on black crime. So still when that happens are are those people racist can you be racist when you're out there shooting and robbing. The people of of the same skin color I mean come all. But I may not need to look at the root of the problems. You don't want to thank you ma'am.
