Good afternoon and welcome to salute to say yes. It's February the eleventh and RSI guess this is our our our Valentine's Day show generally be my Valentine. How will cause your handsome man and you used his junior Travis nicer vehicle in mesa I'm I'm that would be an upgrade that's pretty shallow enough not. I would hope that you would like me for for what's inside not what's outside. That's the scared and so from the inside. A and I did and worse the devil's slide on China yeah I mean glad to be here. And this reminder and get a little thing on FaceBook last night to remind you gas that is not too late to pull off AAA great Valentine's Day for your significant other. Flowers fade and that they don't last forever chocolate while tasty. And is low low calorie since think ammo. Am 500 rounds would be appropriate. MRE's much like your love for your wife will last forever and ever. Innocent Murray's deals does he opened in scolding constipation here. He opened nice. You know nicely in Mara he Kim might kind of dinner read Kim mites are the most romantic of Ali Campbell might say enough. What we're doing is telling people how to get kicked out of their own room yea exactly well I got a friend that's a divorce attorney some pictures of some businesses play. Glad to be with you end s.'s excited we've got some gas in studio. Witnessed today and been the afforded this and since you kind of got this old bird dog and put together Chapman zoology row event. Well we're happy to welcome. The new share of will Lewis and Mike Decker lieutenant when he each which when when I left the sheriff's office she color. Let's see you were a brick Mason I think he's I. But I'm now we're on a series no we're happy to have both of you here in an originally we had. I talked with will and in Kerry and Mike about talk about the Marcus Whitfield youth camp and and well developments being what they are. It will here's and I didn't kind of I guess a trial by fire no pun intended introduction and what it means to me this year for green accounting and and there was the unfortunate officer involved shooting last night over Monroe and 85 in and in a place that that we've. I think between three and this would probably spent. At least four hours total time there over the course of the years. The fortunately all the deputies are okay there and everybody's in good shape. Bad guy. But I guess deceased. And and you know that's why we don't point guns cops that's probably health hazard. Yeah it well generally speaking an end district first person and clarity declared in the general public. This person is not the victim and anything. Often times you'll see in the print meteor here on the news media that unit is somebody that that is. Killed and an officer involved shooting is is they refer to him as the victim victims. And you're not a victim near well if you're a victim your victim of your own stupidity I think is the best way to put it that's just my two cents but it. Sheriff if you would just kind of walk mr. Rula what you can I know it's. Still off in ongoing investigation of sleds got to do their thing but but whatever you can tell us about it then and well we'd be happy to know and and again we're glad everybody's okay. Yes absolutely. You know Ryan likes our viewer can. Sled slid picks up. They're there's always a criminal case that runs with the speaker is it just past the way to state particle is. To the sheriff's office were running policy investigation to determine and make sure that the the deputies. It here to all policies of of the sheriff's office. And slim coming into the investigation on the stone shooting itself. Suit some of the information I have found is I'm just not able to devote to this particular Tom because I don't wanna I don't know. Anonymous applies investigation or anything like that the last night roughly. 2 o'clock in the morning are a couple of deputies rolled into the parking lot of the super large over on our moderator for twelve mauled in Rhode. There was. Yeah we've we've been out there I think the last called history check bid from from January 1 of points sixteen till today. We've been out there 390. Arms so so once or twice enforcer tours to tours we've been out here I mean if you give that mean this pretty much call today he's. I would be interest to see. That the call volume for the call count for. Let's say the last five years because I know engine do when I let the sheriff's office. That place was formed in our sides on a day today. Yeah we we ya. Quite frankly we didn't have time we wouldn't have Tom during the course oldest. To pull a five year history. It would take easily run and there probably. I mean you you can averaged. You 373 calls last year plus today makes it 39 in total. Tell me you guess which are kind of looking at. The but when the deputies got there they they found a vehicle and parking lot that had a tag that was misused or stolen and they they located two people inside the car. An altercation ensued at that point. Between the suspects now deceased. And in the deputies in and chops were fired in the the suspect was taken down. You know I think it's important for everybody to their debt that. You know immediately upon just discharging the weapons to deputies that were on scene. And the within seconds who went straight into life saving mode. You know they they days started doing chest compression is they had calls. News first responders. If law enforcement or first responders well I mean yes we have we have the medical kits and packs a donor vehicles now. To we're just is responsible for saving lives as we are protecting. The community and sometimes it is taking a life. Well I and I think this is a good example of in protecting the greater good. And despite. The action at that that was forced upon these deputies. In what they had to do that they still had the presence of mind and the civility. To at least try to started to to keep this this suspects from from expire. Yet there's so I mean there were there were. Strong there was strong veteran leader out their last Monday's guest. One of the best and and he was he was on seemed to have to help them. Alter your deputies are fond which was which is very very important. But leaders as a when they were told a news this morning because I couldn't I can verify it everything's captured on video. From the hotel and neutral course. So we have multiple perspectives of the incident and I'll just. Distorted and say it here today. That was. In my mind that was as bad clean issued as you can possibly get. Well I'd say it's that's important known as good to know when and yeah I hope to people that are listening in this you know whether your agree bush ohrnberger Anderson and her Pickens or wherever you are know that that the the men and women that are out doing this job on on the day today or the 99 as the case may be. You know have one goal in my Nash preservation lives and property and that's that's what took place last night. I said last week and I'll laureate reader reiterated I can speak English reiterated this week. I firmly believe that. In many instances. It in any given time on any given day if if there's a death to occurred instead death was going to occur it was going to be somebody yet. And oftentimes it's is the men and women in law enforcement that are exchanging places with somebody. So's bit. You know that good person that average citizen that young guy going home to his wife for life going home to her husband doesn't have to be warned. So. It just worked out the other way. Tonight earlier this morning as the case may be but it. There's that. While you're. And opera hour pretty much closed out with this. You know we we just asked for the support of the community always. You the prayers the pats on the back the thank use. The cup of coffee or cold night. You know there's things work. And in less he's gas and girls and communities behind them and and that's very very important for us to know the communities bonds what we do sir we're. Very thankful to do to the citizens of Greenville county now they've been behind our law enforcement. And continue to stand mono enforcement's there mob. Mock my appreciation to everyone. Let me SS an incredible amount I guess a personal note you know you can hear your in this job now offer. What sixty days and right at sixty days and and you know this this isn't as common currency the caddies beginning to be common occurrence in room counting unfortunately but not as much as some other places. How has this been for you both personally and professionally in dealing with your first incident of this magnitude. While you're there every day yesterday's very very different is it's new different America you don't come into the same thing every day and you know it's. Barring the situations like this I'm boring homicides. You know that the critical lessons. Its the best job ever. You know that you're not talk about that before and yeah we joked about it a little bit but it it it really is it's a great job I mean it's. Having the opportunity to work with men and women like we have lingering accounting I mean you know a look around the rest of the state an image it's fantastic men and women. They just don't have the assets and resources that we do agreeable count right the support of our county administrator Joker now has been on the belief. He has been 88 key element in this transition and helping us get set in straight. From a budgetary perspective all the way to an asset equipment manpower. You within within days. The punitive and jerk no Davis. Much much needed twelve new dispatchers. Twelve new dispatch positions agreeable county we haven't had. I dispatcher upgrade agreement county and in every decade now and he gave us ten new deputies to put on the road. You know since since we've been there we now actually have legal counsel and share socks we have in house counsel which is something we've never had before. You know we've had. We had. The unity in the county. County attorneys but they don't work directly for the sheriff's office right and they'll they'll tell you that the solicitor doesn't work for this year he works for the slowest. Right we now have in house counsel at the sheriff's office to help us mitigate some of these circumstances and situations. Help us to get to the policies make sure we're hearing to. The federal standards in the state standards. You know just these minor upgrades have been had been huge. For the sheriff's office and you know it's just been it's been really really good thing for us. I'm Taylor on that note let's take our first break when we come back we're gonna talk about the Marcus Whitfield youth camp who Marcus was what do you can't does how the kids are selected and in and you need some money to make this thing happen and and we talk about how we're gonna how we're gonna accomplish that was good listeners per month. The debate George W or. 1063 W ordeal with chuck and John. And our very special guest will be right back stay with us. Welcome back salute to service we got it Roland today a beautiful day out there if pre Valentine's Gaza don't be lazy and forgetful. I'm kinda at this above those. Glad to be here we need to take Johnny and check in in this stadium we've got some gas was this Greenville county sheriff will Lewis and and some other aid course a guinier the other names I'm so badly names are maybe the lieutenant Mike decadent Tenet Mike Decker in Terry long interior law. They're both fabulous people fabulous individual some and this is you know of course were probably generally always the most well armed. A brave and valiant show that takes place in this building and then today especially. If you get your gut. No worries about taking anybody got any kind of a little today at Maine did ski decent meal I OK corral and Doc Holliday in in wider hurt them at a little known fact Mike might certified in CPR. On which means if you have a heart attack in front of me. Probably not make you eat you're out there at your honor your heart. Opponents and. Ole Ole. Well that's awful now here is your great instructor and I'll listen to everything you said thank you both you're both tough and bet they had to do it twice because I don't I'm not against it anyway picture. Marcus Whitfield youth camp out on this program has been going on for what 2000. 9090000. There right in there. Give us a little background on on on white well. First before we do do that Marcus Whitfield dream catchers deputy killed in the line of duty in what 97. 98 family has this preacher was 97 to the year before I started. They'd kill over it roper mountain and in Woodruff stand for in the the Waffle House in and I can thank you know was 98 because out with career when that happened I remember I remember it well. Now that that it comes back in my brain. But the the bill with fields of parents and I had have played an instrumental role in in in this campaign. Kind of furthering the the cause of putting the use through the at risk youth so to speak in the kind of pointing in the right direction they're absolutely so what. What is he can't do and where you hold it and what you need. Well at so those are all great questions but yeah Micah Malia have mania. It really taken a tragedy in and use that as a sort of a platform that to decent and hugely positive right in the community and no wasn't long after that that the youth camp started and we've hosted it. I think maybe as many different places as he could possibly host a youth camp it's Bennett's wade Hampton high school it's been at Furman University it's been a Kim buck Horne. It's been a middle school and last year earlier before last we actually had to move it to Berea high school. Because the facilities at buck corn just weren't big enough for what we're doing while. Outpost is pretty amazing I think the first couple years we probably had twenty. Thirty kids something like that yeah. We wanted to break a hundred for awhile and now western think we had 1151. Warning. Now how these kids selected or they pay it is is something that that the kids can volunteer to go to her they have to be recommended. Well it's it's actually a little bit of both when the camp first started. Who went to the gas aren't as we said hey can you identify some kids for a slip. You know maybe they've madam made a bad decision reversed her mission was some propensity for making a bad decision. You know kids that you recommend you know come at a camp that that would benefit from a week of of being around. You know cops that if you can imagine that being different or not I don't anyway or not they're like shut up. They learn it's shocking and I try to turn and we have yeah we've is anyway. It's been positive. Despite what it actually have a pretty good track record we have we meet kids all the time and it's. That it got through the program and it's it's changed the solar. What what kind of AA and what I think when people. Imagine a a youth camp it's it's. You know. The typical youth camp kinda stuff where you're out doing you know you're rushing for fifteen minutes in the year you're off to have a class on. Horticulture and and things of that nature what what makes the Marcus Whitfield youth camp differed from any other youth camp. Well we don't we don't have any merit badges so and so that's one difference but so. The thing that I think makes a differences as well we're focus on and on for the the whole week is this character. And help these kids to see that that they are capable far more than. Maybe they think they are there parents think they are or even you know what society expects from them. There's this whole idea of you know adolescence Kitna passes a fairly new thing in the United States of America. If you think about our founding fathers they had in full time jobs when they were 1415 yeah home. And we pretty much give people pass until their thirty to try to do something significant with their life and basically this is it this is a week that says you know we don't accept that we don't accept that for you you shouldn't accept that for years. Now what age groups and he's he's as you mentioned some of them are firmer as sorrow which school resource officer so we talk in middle school. Focus or middle school and high school or what age groups yeah we we target middle school to start with. An and we've had a camera. Flex on both ends of that does because of kids and of it if you're we've had kids and have come for five times. And and we'll have kids that that keep coming to a point where we just have to say hey would you like him back as a junior counselor. And we had so we have a lot of kids that says the outcome may be five years. And you know that Ferraro I can't see where that's a bad thing now it's a great thing I think it's the natural evolution throughout all care. So you ought to go from you know something that identifies at risk kids. But then starts attracting kids that wanna be leaders in and help them develop into leaders and take a leadership role in the camp. Modem line. That day in and of itself is kind of success story way what do you figure the percentages of of kids to come back into that role while some. The best in the math class guy myself I think that and his and a purpose but via I know we can't Obama humanities. I don't know Imus doesn't gasping for breath. Male would you say I gotten more than one less than ten or isn't a pretty significant number. Oh I think advocates. It may be right around 10%. And it's one of those things were kids maybe wanna do it that. Don't have an opportunity to do it right and we haven't. We've been working on developing more of a formal structure to do that Kenneth thanks. Well we really love to do is the kids that we identify that are about to age out of the camp offer leadership camp over the Christmas break. Bring those kids and bring them through the theme that we're gonna do that summer. Go through all the things that we wanna instill in these middle schoolers trying to mop and then when once summer gets there ready to hit the ground around and then. Be a significant mentor for on the younger kids. You know John days this kind of got me to think and maybe there's an opportunity you're speaking alike leadership camps and an even down the global youth camp there's there's room for bringing in some of the the people that we've gotten to know maybe for much they were racially should get out sang in the same thing you've got you know combat veterans and and you know we just other veterans from all different generations that may be a little and some of their experience and some of there. There their skill sets to something like this if if that's something maybe interest and India be worth reach now to absolutely it would. Funding I know is always a challenge AA in it is with any any charitable cause. How do you guys usually raise money and what can we do to help you. Well traditionally. We've raised money for the program through the you know marks were filled golf tournament and it's it's a yearly golf tournament that. Mike Molina is as parents started the together. And traditionally that the funds from that term and have been split between a scholarship program and also use camp. In recent years as word has kind of gotten out from the campus grown. We've we've had individuals step up and give us money this year coming up there's actually. A company that has volunteered to do all of our shirts for the sheriff's office camp. Which it is. Is a pretty huge. Deal for us. Because we give two. Two T shirts to the faculty people so they don't have to Wear the same teacher all weeklong right hand and we give a teacher to every kid at the yeah. It at the last day camp so we were all sort of in uniform for the last day. So. As that. Sorry if I were passing no it's great I didn't press pass you cannot get an hour. Eric I'm age just sit and so there isn't some clarity for the people that are listening. This is this is entirely funded through charitable donations there's no tax money going into this this is. This is strictly on. Funded through the goodwill on either private citizens of war companies. Yeah absolutely and we are doing something a little bit different this year. Now we had a lot of success this this past winner with the notion of November in the dark shape December I'll like it I welcome obviously much you might not funny trial and then take part in that I don't know but I. Knew he had our back always. So. Now this year the sheriff has agreed to let us do whiskers for Whitfield. Have apparently. The facial hair shall continue to stop. Pitchers are discouraged talk with the death that's going to be right out. Even analyze the did you come without allay yourself. Oh home I have a few times and of those things is kind of like L 1:35. PM. I don't there was this hour and that's. Well hey it's it's 88. Just out of curiosity yes Abbas and I'd like to go funnier something. We haven't him and knowing that we and thought about that maybe I don't know if that's something we can do or not I don't yeah I mean if you're a you've already got a final one. That's true so it out so yeah I don't see any reason why you'd that would be good avenue because that. I. Think would would open the door for a lot more donations. That you otherwise may miss out on sure people. You know their home their sit on the couch doing work is when the news is nothing to click over and you don't go to go funny page and drop five dollars or 25 dollars during the reverses. You have and go somewhere in donate or go play in the golf turn herself and so just. All food for food for thought. What we come back we'll finish up here with the the good sheriff and in the good lieutenant in in the meantime you listen 163 W ordeal which I think John salute service. Via your back allow. Welcome back slid service and John and shut glad to be with you 1063 dead yet OR media states talk station and get some gas in the studio whiz today from Greenville county sheriff's office. Sheriff will Lewis and lieutenant Decker been talking about a couple of things for us. It's kicked off the show talking about the officer involved. A shooting last night and then the though Whitfield youth camp in getting go in house been successful in years past and getting some community involvement is important. Now on to something a little more general of that and mentioned to you during the the break kind of harking back to the the days of the the campaign. And obviously Manny Ramirez as well bumpy ride for everybody for. Going through that and one of the things I remember at the the debate forum that was it zoo in downtown Greenville. And the different candidates were asked. About you know some of the issues of crime and some of the things at the end you know who ever McCain sure would be facing. And one and one of the candidates Ron. The issue of property crimes. And then that kind of then rotated over to your turn to address that issue of property crimes and what really kind of got me in it. Is stuck with me. It was a little bit impressed by it because my my daytime job we're always looking at your root cause analysis on certain things in the issue was property crimes. And you went straight to a root cause analysis type of response. And addressing narcotics. And that. The drive to be able to purchase narcotics to feed your addiction. Is what feeds a lot of the property crimes. And property crimes or something that affects. More people on average in the county then then being robbed. And it you know in in a business or perhaps you being physically assaulted some of the things like that. How. Kind of with the the plan that she had in mind as you sit in the office this year for removing full word. Oh. What's the attacked at west the focus and now dealing with the property crimes in the root cause of narcotics are you seeing some things now being sheriff that are. Making it look like you know. The more difficult proposition or or here are some easy things weakened because I mean one and thing I mean kicking off the show the the hotel. That the incident that was involved that what 370. Something Carl slayer 390 calls last year that's more than one a day and things like that and drugs is a problem there I mean how do you see addressing. That now as human four share for Greenville county. You have to a toady wanna simplest fixes so far has been moving the narcotics division back up undersea ID. Which is the criminal investigation division it was not. Undersea ID before. And moving them back under CID gives them direct contact with the property crimes divisions now believe Tenet. And the captains ever there's divisions are also. They're they're both over the division of narcotics agent over her property current endeavor homicide and over auto theft. All of these things. All the crimes that relate predominantly to drugs with the substantial percentage. Of do the crimes are being committed and have a a route calls of drugs in somewhere nexus two drugs in some way. Have no I have have now all been put under the same division commander. In so far everything from the symposium. Shooting that we had last week. Two to last night's. There this morning cheering. Too old just par for proper standard property current cost. We've had narcotics agents out who on almost every one of those calls and they've been able to address a lot of the promise you I know that gap. Yet we know this person yes this does have a drug nexus and we're finding that exactly what we said during the course of the election is true. I mean it's it's a substantial number I mean I may even go above the 8590%. Going to do is laugh and say that the nexus is connected to drugs in some way. It's been a benefit to the property crimes investigators they had they now have a resource. In the narcotics division that they've never had before identify people it's an aide at an asset to the narcotics division to identify people. Who were committing corrupt. Did they didn't know before he may not necessarily be directly connected to the transporting trafficking are selling narcotics. But these are people that facilitators crowns and some other way through property car. Same thing goes with homicide so that's been a huge bonus so far this and that's that's just one of the small things that we don't. Go 'cause I mean that was just one of the things are remembered as it just seemed to be something widespread and I think a lot of people. Don't make that connection that you know when your house is running into some nice to measure Blu-ray player and your guitar and some announced. That's that's probably headed to the pawnshop they didn't break in there because they needed a deep a Blu-ray player or they wanna learn how to play guitar. They're needn't to move that merchandise get cash to get the drop. Access correct them and we if we found that in more occasions than that tired yet it's been it's just there's the restructuring of the agency itself. Has has benefited. Tenfold and certain aerial. It was it was a kind of weather situations like what we heard after September 11 in the US on this realignment with departments at the federal level war yet we knew this was going on but we knew a little piece of the puzzle in these guy has never were talking to one another said did did that type of situation filter all the way down I can answer that path and I don't ask with respect or federal Brothers and sisters please please don't really serve almost to the federal and I had adequate liquidity a similar instance. And I numbered in here and only one's ever been a top and hey Carlos. But I as silent is that people I guess we take for granted that okay yeah you can see it in Washington DC and something that's got thousands upon thousands and thousands of employees and all the bureaucracy there. That when one guy you guys work in the same building downtown neighboring Miller here and with in the same county. That there should surely there's no. Communication issues well it let me I am and on the field this record because it's it's no different John than it you know corporate environment where you've got. Young three different divisions. That are you know all working towards the same endless you know say it's in an inning or something like that. You've got you know the the project management people that has got one thing laid out and you've got the sales organization marketing organization both do in their own things and in completely different worlds. They're all going to the same place but they're taken different related get there again and nobody is talking to one another the same things men historically true not only. It this agency but it didn't you know others brought shirts a common problem as you've got. You know people that hey you know they gather intelligence together formation and for whatever reason they're not willing or able to share it. For one reason or the other and it it's I mean a lot of stuff and there really does. Spirits are suggesting. You know we talk about this whole Tom bit. You communication is key factor in everything that you do and and you were responsible for communications. It new and we don't communicate with each other. Al and that's one of the things I've been trying to build since January 3 is is that their communication is a real Ahmet communications not only is it inner departmental. But also with other agencies. Throughout the county unit to include the federal government to include state agencies have been what we've been working. Some task force. Operations and we've included state agencies in the federal government to assist because. If they have assets that we don't have a degree in accounting and so that the taxpayers of Greenville county don't incur. But did this this full budget. We we need to make sure that we use all the resources and assets we. The lessons it. Was could take this slow we got one more break to get out the way and come back and Indians are give our hugs and kisses to these these fine upstanding citizens that we. Push him out the door deliciously service one a 63 Debbie or. Welcome back excellent service a lot of local homeowners extreme de BO RD Johnson or Jeff Porter and and Allison gas Fred Greenville county sheriff will Lewis. Final segment. This is it goes fast it does but it's been a good conversation men and AM and I'm unhappy that the sheriff loose setting and then in end. You know and we actually broke. I guess she say broke the story you heard it here first the commentary about the what the video showed. From slid everything with the officer involved shooting overnight so that's kind of historic for her strength that's actually where we broke the story is actually matter usually breaking things yeah. I mean it's it's truly since we're about out of time. In this segment isn't sure when but on I want to thank all three of you for coming and thanks lieutenant Becker in and carrying in and we sincerely. Wish the best for the Whitfield youth camp and they know that whatever you need in the way of getting them information. Out to the public we're happy to help with it's it's a good cause a cause and I've been involved in personally. I've seen personally the difference it makes in these kids' lives. Usually for the good. Most most of the time. There's always 10% that. It it was. To be involved in the kid's life at that. Early age and be able to have clean it what you hope is a positive impact can be a positive influence. For them. Is meaningful. Yeah for me to culmination. Boys. Today to week I took took office. One of our first. Participants of the marks were for youth camp. Graduated south collar criminal justice can mean came degree of county shares shot up there who Jamie are. You'll are often know little Jenny you're kidding me marry me a little anymore Citadel's citadel grad. Please in National Guard now. Yeah he was deployed he's a great great kid and to walk in and and swear in. Someone who can use all come from youth do man that is a cool to act and he gave me defeat us. And I am not penalized and that's. I can't ask you this then family and I have one bit that was it doesn't play. Everybody else is crude for there is in the afternoon my my family entity here that I'm sorry has been my feeling at work but. That that's good news man in that debt. You know you can go a career in law enforcement end and never see the impact can make because you're just out around for the impact part your round for the for the bad partner fortunately. And aid try as you might you never did see the end result. Yeah so that's that's good news. Mike is there anything left you wanna say date for the Whitfield camp points of contact for the Whitfield camp anything like that. Yes sure you can much fresher and a pressure Rican register online entering cancer cells web site. Which is just yet GCS Rhode dot org connect. And the third week July is when camp it's gonna be this year's called be the change so. I greatly. I likened likened alive. John I'm sure there's something I just want to say one more time. Whiskers for Whitfield. 100. Singles off the twisters her when I held one of the year little under is not it and gladly cast a stay at. I'll let you guys Kenya's Benson timeliness and and yes same as for me the check if there's anything we can do to help spread the word on social media on air you need to see you know stop by again and in May be stopped by again. And have some you know one or two of the kids he's done the Kenya join we can and be glad to host that. Manifest a pretty good idea man if you want. After the camps over if you wanna pick a couple of them. And bring him over here. And in will put him on the radio and in will let him talk about what their experience was and how it impacted and I think it's important into canyon a little after action report yet. Straight out of the horse's mouth yeah because they weren't they and it just gets me is in Annan is guilty is is other people talking about clothes the use generation and and the future and stuff like that will the only way we're really gonna impact the future is about changing the life of the kid today. Yet because I mean you know. For too long they'll they'll be the ones that are going to be in charge. If you wanna make an impact and have a a more positive future you'd better start influence in some kids today have already picked out my retirement home because I'm. That's.
